Creating business from passion

Junior Radu Jitariu is turning a hobby into a major money maker. Jitariu makes t-shirts for Marcus sporting events in his spare time. It all started after another student’s failed attempt at making shirts.

“A girl from Flower Mound said ‘Oh, I’m going to make t-shirts, everybody’s going to buy them!’ and she didn’t do a very good job at it. She actually lost $80 doing it,” Jitariu said. He credits his success, in part, to his good money management, and his ability to be both concise and personable.

Since then, Jitariu’s shirts have been relatively popular schoolwide. “Last time I got a crowd around 139 [people] exactly,” Jitariu said. That, coupled with a cost of $15 per shirt, makes for a solid revenue. “Last time, I made around $800 or $900 profit.”

Jitariu has made a number of shirts through football season. Probably the most notable of these are the “Come at us, bro” tanks, which he made for the Battle of the Mound. Jitariu also works to publicize his work, whether it be on Facebook or just walking up to students in the hallway and promoting his product.

“I’m also in the process of making t-shirts for the basketball season. They’re already being sold right now,” Jitariu said.

Although he mainly does his business as a way to earn some extra money on the side, Jitariu has been rather successful. He hopes to soon be able to make the shirts from home- for now, he uses a specific company. “People have been doing this for a while. I just happen to be one of the first people at Marcus,” Jitariu said.
