Olympic dreams

April 10, 2021

Because of the decision to move the 2020 Olympic Games to 2021, athletes like Sydney who were born in 2005 now qualify, giving her a chance at the Olympics in Tokyo.

The road to the Olympics from Elite isn’t easy. To be considered for Olympic Trials, gymnasts’ scores from past competitions are considered and they have to attend a special camp.

At the end of the camp, the committee, made up of some of the biggest names in gymnastics, decides who goes to the trials.

Because many of the gymnasts Sydney is competing with have been training for the 2020 Olympics for years, she doesn’t want to get her hopes up.

“I would love for this year,” Sydney said. “But there have already been gymnasts who have been working super hard throughout these years that have been eligible for a number of years to be at this Olympics.”

Even if Sydney doesn’t qualify this year, she plans to work toward the 2024 Summer Olympics in France.

“This is what I want to do in life,” Sydney said. “The Olympics is my ultimate goal.”
