Volleyball heads to regionals in Abilene

After winning the first three playoff games, volleyball has succeeded in securing a spot at regionals. The team began their winning streak at the first playoff game against Justin Northwest and continued to win against LD Bell and Grapevine.

The team is two games away from playing for the state championship. In the regional semi-finals game, the team will play Arlington Martin. Earlier in the year, they played this school and lost. Several players were injured at the time, but now they are back and will be playing.

“I think it’s going to be a good game,” Coach Cristie Liles said. “I think that we will win. I think that we are more well-rounded than they are.”

According to Liles, the team this year continues to be the underdogs. Liles said they are not at all like last year’s team.

“My team last year had a lot of pressure,” Liles said. “They felt there were a lot of things that they had to live up to.  This year’s team didn’t feel as much pressure, so I think it’s helped.”

Currently, the team is ranked 68 in the nation and 17 in the state with an overall score of 27-15.

“We are trying to build leaders for life, trying to get people to prepare for their futures,” Liles said. “We are getting stronger, bigger and faster.”

The semi-regional finals game is on Friday, Nov. 11 in Abilene at 8:00 p.m.
