Battle of the Axe creator remembered by community

Angelina Amilibia

One of the creators of the Battle of the Axe game and former assistant superintendent Doug Killough, 77, passed away from an illness on Sept. 8, 2017.

Killough was also the Lewisville High School principal for 15 years, so Lewisville’s 9th/10th grade campus was named in his honor in 2011. He helped numerous non-profit organizations in the area and was nominated citizen of the year in both Lewisville and Flower Mound.

Principal Gary Shafferman went to the funeral on Sept. 12, 2017. He said everyone remembered Killough for his love of students and of his high school.

“When you know someone cares a great deal about the kids and what they do, then you know the way a principal should be, and how we should carry ourselves,” Shafferman said.

Shafferman said he likes what Doug has done with the Battle of the Axe between Lewisville and Marcus, and that rivalry is always good as long as it stays friendly.

“Doug was just a really good man and a really good person,” Shafferman said.
